Day's End was a last minute addition to a small series of carvings made during an art retreat in Buckhorn Ontario in October 2021. After each day's work I would finish off my evening with a relaxing canoe trip to watch the sun set over the bay. On one particular night just as I was about to turn and head home, I found myself drawn into shore by a loud and unusual noise. Through the fading light and thick brush, I discovered this large pileated woodpecker pecking into a damp and dead birch stump. Unbothered by my presence, I sat and watched this beautiful creature until the last of the day's light was gone. Upon returning to the cottage, I immediately pulled out a spare piece of wood and began drawing.
