Burned & Carved Wood

2022
Barred is a burned and carved wood portrait completed in autumn of 2022. This artwork was inspired by one of its main source images, a photo used to publicize the decision of Canadian and American governments to systematically hunt and kill these animals for the crime of being the wrong species. The killing of these barred owls was part of a last ditch effort to save another more preferable owl species (the spotted owl), who have become endangered due to irresponsible logging practices on the west coast. Rather than rectifying our own actions, we have chosen instead to slaughter these other owls for providing natural competition. As we have granted ourselves the rights and responsibility to pick and choose which species should live and die in nature, all other animals in the wild must compete for what little resources we have left them
This artwork is ready to hang and includes a cleat-style picture hanger for easy installation. No framing is necessary
